My Personal Story
When my son Mohamed was 6 years old, I eagerly began introducing him to Salah. He would join us at the masjid, mimicking our movements with innocent curiosity. He learned that Salah is one of the pillars of Islam, and he memorized Surah Al-Fatiha and a few other small surahs. I was so proud of him.
But as time went on, I noticed something troubling. Mohamed had learned the mechanics of praying but didn't seem to understand why we pray. He would pray whenever we asked, but there was no spark, no connection. It felt like a routine, something he did because he had to, not because he wanted to
I remember feeling so lost and worried. How could I help him see the beauty and purpose of Salah when I struggled to explain it myself? It pained me to think he might grow up seeing prayer as just another chore.
One day, in a moment of desperation, I tried a different approach. Mohamed asked, "Mom, why do we pray five times?"
I took a deep breath and said, "It's our chance to talk to Allah, the Creator, five times a day.
Imagine meeting the King of Kings every single day! You can thank Him, and tell Him your problems, even if it's just about a toy you can't find. And the best part? He Himself invites us to meet Him five times a day!" His eyes widened with surprise. "Really?" he asked.
"Yes, Mohamed," I replied, my heart swelling with hope.
That conversation marked a turning point. As Mohamed started memorizing Juz Amma, his teacher encouraged him to recite the small surahs during Salah.
Slowly, his prayers became more than just words. They became meaningful. Watching him pray, sometimes longer than expected, reciting surahs I hadn't even taught him, brought tears to my eyes.
It was then that I realized the importance of connecting him to the purpose of Salah. Without that understanding, he would have continued praying like a robot, devoid of emotion.
Watching Mohamed transform from a child who prayed out of obligation to one who cherishes his moments of Salah inspired my broader vision.
